Phil Mickelson is one of the most popular professional golfers of the last decade. He has won 20 titles on the PGA Tour and has over $64 million in prize money to his name. But the most interesting thing to happen to Mickelson wasn’t on the golf course. It was when he played a 2 million dollar wager with Tiger Woods. We’ll look at this wager and its aftermath in some detail in this post.

Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, the second child of three boys to William Mickelson, a lawyer, and Kathleen Mickelson (née Haney). Mickelson’s parents were both active in politics. His father, a graduate of the University of Arizona Law School, was a lobbyist and lawyer. In 1992, William ran as a Democrat for the United States Senate, losing to incumbent Republican senator John McCain. Phil’s older brother, Tim, is a lawyer in Tucson, Arizona.

Mickelson was born in San Diego, California to Jim and Mary Mickelson. His father is an airline pilot, and his mother worked at a bank in San Diego. He is the oldest of three brothers. He has two brothers, Mark and Tim, who are seven and nine years younger than he is, respectively.

Mickelson’s mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer, which led to his decision to have his testicles removed in a preemptive mastectomy. Mickelson is nicknamed Lefty, a reference to his left-handedness.

Phil Mickelson won the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship in 1990 while attending Arizona State University, defeating teammate Notah Begay III and Stanford’s Brad Faxon in a playoff.

He also has 10 Majors to his name, the last one coming in the form of the 2010 Masters. He has been a pro for around 23 years and has accumulated roughly $122.5 million in prize money.
