Games are the best way to learn English. They make the learning process easy and enjoyable. They motivate you, teach you complex topics in minutes and make concepts easy for you. You will enjoy learning English skills as well. As with games, you don’t need to juggle complex concepts and various lists of words, the knowledge you gain from games will stay with you forever.ESL Games Plus offers interactive online games for teaching & learning the English language as a simple language. Our learning games are mostly suitable for teaching ESL children and teenagers. There are activities to teach and practice English grammar, vocabulary, sentences, listening, and pronunciation skills. By playing our fun educational games, students learn English vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, listening, pronunciation, and phonics.

Most of the time, adults feel shy to play the game thinking that it is only for kids. They like to tick off lists of nouns that start with Y or active-passive rules but won’t try different games to learn the language.

This method is wrong!

Language games help you master English without getting bored. Research has shown that things learned through games stay with us forever. We learned to apply the skills in our lives.

I am going to discuss some amazing games with you. Learn about them and apply them.

Sentence Game

There are different versions of this game.

One person or team will write one word in one version on paper. For example, one writes volleyball on paper or a whiteboard. A team has to make a sentence out of this word. The other team then has to make a complex sentence out of that word. And then the first team has to write more complex or longer sentences than the other team. A timer will be running in the background. If time runs out and a team fails to write a more complex sentence, they lose the game.

In another version, a team can write an unstructured sentence. For example, I love the game of basketball. The other team has to figure it out and manage it. Then, that team will write an irregular sentence for the first team.

If you’re playing it in a classroom, the teacher might split you into two groups for the challenge.

This game will improve your grammar.

Dictionary Game

In it, you can choose a complex word from the dictionary, and ask others to write the definition of that word. Students will guess the meaning and write the definition on paper. After that, all the papers will be collected and the testimonials will be read out loud to the other colleagues. They will vote for the definitions that are true to them. The person who wrote the correct definition and those who voted for it will win points.

This game will increase your English vocabulary.

Taboo game

In it, you can give other members a set of words they shouldn’t use in their writing.

Let me explain this game through an example.

Suppose you challenge a person to write a note on their favorite food. Along with the topic, give him a set of words he can’t use in his paragraph. You can give it the taboo words, “delicious and healthy.” Now he has to use the synonyms of these words.

This game will improve your writing skills, cognitive skills, and vocabulary.

Secret Message

A fun game to improve your listening skills!

It involves each group member sitting in a circle with a pen and paper. One person will formulate a complex sentence and whisper it into the other person’s ear. That person has to write that sentence on a piece of paper and whisper it to the other person. This will continue until the last person. The last person will say the sentence, and the first person will identify whether the sentence is correct or not.

It is important to write the sentence on the paper as it will help to identify the person who made the mistake.

Roleplay game

In this, think of a scenario, for example, calling an office manager or complaining to or interviewing a restaurant manager. Think of characters, write them down on the mat and ask your friends to pick any random character. Each person has to play the role written on their chosen chit.

Give yourself two minutes to prepare yourself mentally and try to role-play. Make a jury to observe your character and give you a score.

If you are going to play it in the classroom, the teacher may assign you roles and judge you.

This game will improve your communication and listening skills.

Here are some games you can play in groups. You can play them in a classroom setting or at home with your friends. You will feel the difference after playing the game. If you don’t have a friend group or a classroom, you can go for online games. There are many online and physical games that will help language learners. Play them and learn English anytime.
